Re: [PER] Birthing cages

OK, I'm not looking to cause a debate either, but I ALWAYS cage my queens before they have their kittens for just the reasons you gave here.  That way kittens don't get scattered all over the house or room.  I have had more than one queen who would get into a cage herself a few days before birthing.   I guess they just felt safer there.  One queen was adamant about wanting to be in a cage to have her kittens and climbed the cage when the door was shut.  When I opened the door she crawled right in and snuggled down!  She had her kittens 48 hours later and had no intentions of leaving.  Very amusing!

I also cage my cats when I leave for a long period of time.  I do this for two reasons.  One day I came home after being gone most of the day and found a young female hanging from a floor lamp by her paw which was caught in the light fixture.  It was not even the kind of fixture one would expect to have a problem with.  We were lucky she hadn't struggled enough to break her leg.  So I'm just paranoid enough that I don't like coming home to any surprises.  So I put them in a cage with a treat.  The third reason for occasional caging is that the cat is then used to being in a cage and isn't as likely to pout at a show.  Other than these reasons I like them to run loose so we can enjoy them and they can enjoy us.

I know many people are against these... I am not looking to cause a
debate. I would like for my girls to be confined to a cage for atleast
their first litters... until they are settled with their little ones.

When I did rescue I remember having mother cats going crazy running
around with their kittens in their mouths. Jumping onto things and
trying to drag their kittens under things. They were confined right away
if they did this, to all I had, a LARGE SIZE dog cage. But, I had to
weave cardboard along the bottom since the kittens could pretty well fit
through the bars. They calmed down quite fast when I did this. I don't
necessarily like the "cage" idea, but on the other hand, if it is the
safest option I will of course do it.

My first litter is not due until the end of June. I am trying to get
inexpensive ideas for a birthing cage. It seems that not many places in
Canada sell cat cages. I have heard that large ferret nation cages are
close to the same size?

Any ideas people can share would be fantastic. I know mommy doesn't
really wander too much the first couple weeks any ways, but I don't want
the cage to be too small.

Thanks in advance!
