Re: [PER] throw away breed Exotic Long Hair prevented from breeding to persian male inCFA

I agree and disagree with you. :)

I agree: the ridiculous contracts some Persian breeders have are NOT helping foster new breeders at all. I have railed against them for years (to little effect).

I disagree - that PKD is to blame... Back in the 80s, it was FIP... before that.. FeLeuk... Each of these took their toll, but they didn't contribute significantly. I do wonder what will happen to the breed when we finally get a genetic test for HCM.

I believe there are MANY factors that have led to the decline of the Persian breed - Exotics, yes, are part of it. Why? Because people are lazier - and/or have less time than they did 20-30 years ago. If you go back in the old yearbooks, you will find most of the Persian breeders were married, stay-at-home wives. Now, most couples have both people working, so much less time to spend on the extensive groom required by Persians. Or you have single people who are breeders - but of course, they are generally still full-time or more than full-time employed, so the time they have available is severely limited.

But I will not lay the "blame" just on Zots.. too many other factors!

Additionally, back "in the day" - there were VERY few breeds to pick from. Now we have a plethora. There used to be so many Persian breeders because it was one of a few breeds to pick from.

Add to that - AR legislation, need for instant gratification, and the ability to meet up with other cat-loving people on the internet rather than shows...

(To those that don't know - I happen to think Exotics certainly have their place in the show ring- the SH ones, the ones that the breed standard calls for. I will never believe that Mimics of any breed belong on the show bench, however. Each breed must have at least ONE trait that makes it unique. Exotics have short hair - that is what makes them UNIQUE. Lh Zots are not unique. We already have a longhair cat that meets the Persian standard - it's called a Persian.)

In 2009 I showed a tortie ELH in eight shows. The first time she had competition IN HER DIVISION was in the eighth show. So the seven shows before, if she would not have been entered, noone would have seen a parti persian. In Marion, IL 2009, she was also the ONLY persian kitten entered, so out of 30 AB kittens in that small show, the persian breed could only muster one single kitten, who was not even a persian.
