Re: [PER] throw away breed Exotic Long Hair prevented from breeding to persian male inCFA

Thank you Dawna: I am not suggesting that an ELH not show its designation as Persian only but as Persian ELH carrier (or as a breed of its own if necessary). Presumably it should be similar to Persian; Chincilla/CPC/Tabby/Smoke/bi-color/Odd eye/etc. INDEED all these designations need to be noted in the number and identification of each cat so that similar to the other designations a breeder CAN choose what they do or do not want to incorporate in their program (some people want CPC, etc). I am just concerned that this breed is becoming a "throw away" breed, because according to CFA rules, it can not be bred back to a Persian male and hence becomes difficult to sell or buy.  I couldn't imagine CFA ruling that these other designations (Chincilla, CPC, etc...)  be prevented from being bred back to Persian males and can't see why this should not be changed.
Any comments concerning hair length is good to note, I would think that it is a admirable trait within its own distinction and should be judged accordingly, not everyone likes the intensive grooming, I know of people who would love to own Persian but wouldn't consider it because of the intensive hair issues, My ELH has very manageable hair but still has the beauty of a persian (I  have never bred him so don't know what hair length would be produced but know his hair IS more manageable than his mothers). Your  comment is very helpful and would need to be considered as part of the issue in determining if an ELH should be considered a breed of its own or as a Persian ELH carrier. I would be interested to know what is the experience of each person in breeding the ELH back to Persian if they may find that the hair is shorter, certainly each persain has different lengths of hair and I have seen ELH with much longer hair that a lot of Persians, These all need to be  addressed. Thank you, I look forward to further discussion. Blessings Rose

Christine,

With all due respect, the Exotic Longhairs ARE less than Persian.  They come from Exotic Shorthars.  That means they are NOT pure Persians.  Thus, they are less than Persians, just as the Color Point Carrier (CPC) is not  Pure Persian.

Some breeders have wanted to have the ELH given a separate number designation just as the CPC has, but as Angela pointed out, it is difficult for newer breeders to know the ramifications and some breeders tell them that it doesn't matter if they are CPC.  Believe me, it does matter when one tries to sell CPC kittens.  But at least with the number designation we can see that the cat is not a Pure Persian and can determine if we want that or not.  If the ELH is accepted as Persians we will not be able to make that determination.  That is important for me as I had a Persian male that came from a Persian/Exotic breeder and was passed off as Pure Persian.  I believe he was not as his coat was shorter than it should have been and he passed that on to his offspring on occasion.  I DON'T WANT THAT!  And I'm sure many other breeders of Pure Persians feel the same way.

I have to agree with Carissa that it is unwise to promote a mimic breed and even more unwise to call them Pure Persian.

In reading your later post I may have misinterpreted what you were saying.  If so, I sincerely apologize.

Dawna

Hi Rose,

I would really like to know who in their wisdom decided to call them Exotic Longhairs. It is the most uncreditable  decision anyone could make. It is a Persian for heavens sake. No more no less.  I cannot and will not understand why. Ridiculous.

Christine

Is there interest in seeking to promote the Exotic Long Hair as a breed of its own, as it would seem that preventing this breed from being bread back to persian males (the CFA rule) would essentially cause this breed to be a "throw away" breed and I belief after all the efforts that have gone to produce such beautiful cats that this is truly unfortunate. I hope there will be interest in promoting this. Blessings Rose
